Maryland names P3 advocate as transportation secretary
Maryland Governor-elect Larry Hogan has named Pete Rahn as the state’s new Secretary of Transportation.
Rahn served as Cabinet Secretary of Transportation for the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department from 1995 to 2002. He also led the Missouri State Department of Transportation (MoDOT) from 2004 to 2010, during the procurement for the Safe & Sound Bridge P3 program.
Turmoil in the credit markets caused Missouri to opt for a traditional procurement method for the project in 2008.
Rahn headed HNTB’s national transportation practice from 2010 to 2014.
Hogan’s election has put the fate of the USD 2.4bn Purple Line project in question. Hogan expressed concern about the project’s cost during his campaign. He also said that his administration’s focus would be on building roads.
He has said he will not announce his decision on the Purple Line until he takes office on 21 January.
A spokesperson for Hogan told InfraAmericas that he does not believe that the Governor-elect expressed an opinion about P3s during his campaign.
